The Problem
ChatGPT sometimes remembers things you don't want it to remember, or forgets things you do want it to remember. You don't have control over what it retains.
The Solution
Actively manage ChatGPT's Memory feature to remember the right things and forget the wrong things.
How Memory Works
OpenAI's help centre could not be read when this guide was checked on 29 September 2026, so the guide names no plan, menu path or retention period. Confirm those in OpenAI's help centre before you rely on the feature.
ChatGPT's Memory feature can carry facts from one conversation to the next:
- Things you tell it once
- Your preferences
- Common tasks
- Context about you
Example: Tell it once "I'm an employment lawyer in London" → It remembers for all future chats.
Managing Memory
View What ChatGPT Remembers
- Open ChatGPT's settings and find the Memory section
- Read the list of what it has saved
- Delete anything you don't want
Tell ChatGPT What to Remember
Explicit instruction:
Remember: I always need the employment law of England and Wales.
Remember: When I say "draft clause" I want full clause text, not summary.
Remember: I prefer bullet points over paragraphs for analysis.
ChatGPT will store these preferences.
Tell ChatGPT What to Forget
In conversation:
Forget that I mentioned client ABC.
Don't remember any client names I mention.
Delete from memory: previous conversation about XYZ matter.
In settings:
- Delete the memory from the Memory section of ChatGPT's settings, then read the list again to confirm it has gone
Do not rely on an instruction typed into a chat to remove client information. The saved list in settings is what counts.
What to Remember (Useful)
✅ Your role and jurisdiction:
Remember: I'm a corporate lawyer in England & Wales
Remember: I specialise in M&A and private equity
✅ Your preferences:
Remember: I prefer concise answers (under 300 words)
Remember: Always cite case law with full citations
Remember: I use "firm" not "company" for law firms
✅ Your workflow:
Remember: When I say "review this" I want: Summary, Risks, Recommendations
Remember: I always need jurisdiction specified
What NOT to Remember (Risky)
❌ Client names or matters:
Don't remember client names I mention.
Don't store information about specific cases or transactions.
❌ Confidential information:
Don't remember any contract terms I paste.
Don't store any client-identifiable information.
❌ Temporary context:
Forget everything about the ABC transaction after this conversation.
Pro Tips
Monthly memory audit:
- Read the saved memories in settings once a month
- Delete anything client-related
- Keep general preferences
Keep client information out altogether:
- Do not treat a memory setting or a chat mode as permission to enter client information
- What you may put into ChatGPT depends on your firm's plan, its agreement with OpenAI and your firm's policy
- Use placeholders such as "the Client" and "the Buyer" instead of names
Set boundaries early:
First conversation: "Never remember client names, matter details,
or confidential information. Only remember my general preferences
and legal area."
Quick Reference
View memory: the Memory section of ChatGPT's settings
Add to memory: "Remember: [fact]"
Remove from memory: "Forget: [fact]" or delete in settings
Client information: Keep it out and use placeholders
Best practice: Remember preferences, not clients.
